Diligent Parents, Cultivated Habits

One of the things I appreciate most about our Providence community is the diligence of our parents. You are doing many ordinary things faithfully, and those ordinary things are having an extraordinary impact on your children.

I see you being diligent in getting your children to school on time and prepared for the day. You check that Latin vocabulary or math facts have been practiced. You make sure the reading gets done. You ask about the school day. You check FACTS and respond to teacher messages. You help your child think through a difficult assignment without simply doing it for them. You make sure projects are completed and brought to school. You get your children to practices and rehearsals on time. You show up for games, concerts, and school events. You communicate with teachers when you have a question or concern.

So many diligent practices, day in and day out.

These things may feel small and routine, but they are not insignificant. Over time, they form habits. Your diligence teaches your children that faithfulness matters, responsibilities should be embraced, hard things are worth persevering through, and good work is worth doing well.

And of course, this is deeply connected to what we mean by a classical Christian education. We are not simply trying to fill your children’s heads with knowledge. Instead, we are seeking to cultivate their loves, habits, character, and souls. And parents, you are doing that work every day in your homes. As Paul reminds us, and as we remind the students often, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men” (Col. 3:23).

Your diligence, parents, is helping form the kind of young men and women we hope our students will become. When it comes to childrearing, we live in a world of delayed gratification. The work parents do today often seems unnoticed (and underappreciated!), but, by God’s grace, it pays dividends tomorrow and beyond.

So, Providence parents: great job, and keep it up! Your faithful example matters more than you may realize, and your children are being shaped by what they see you faithfully doing day after day.
